Gallura Experience
by Little Green Train & Bus from Tempio Pausania to Arzachena
Welcome to Tempio Pausania, the "City of Stone", as Vittorio Emanuele I awarded it as early as 1833 to celebrate its cultural relevance and typically exposed granite architecture. The short visit - talking also about Fabrizio De Andrè - winds through squares, churches and alleys, up to the old railway station (with the beautiful "Liberty Style" paintings by Giuseppe Biasi -1931-) and to the adjacent Railway Repair-shops, of the Palau-Tempio Pausania-Sassari-Alghero lines. Majestic place, which was enchanted in the early thirties, now a museum (normally closed) and with the machinery still in working order. A Little Green Train leaves just at that moment. We greet him momentarily, to reach him after visiting some famous delights not reachable by train.
In 10 minutes we will reach Calangianus by GT Bus, for the visit to a small and very interesting cork transformation laboratory. A new transfer by GT Bus will let us reach the village of Luras, where you can admire the Dolmen "Ladas" and "Ciuledda", with their more than 5,000 years of history and the Guide will tell us about the Nuragic civilization and, perhaps, of the people of “Shardana". Shortly after - a must for the visitors of Sardinia - we will visit the Galluras Museum, with various rooms about local ethnography and in particular the room dedicated to "Sa Femmina Accabadora" (the one who gave life, ... and took it away). Our GT bus awaits us to drive us comfortably through the inland of Gallura, far from the railway line on which we will return.
It will be impossible not to mention the legendary “Muto di Gallura” (the Mute of Gallura) Bastiano Tansu, who lived in hiding during the blood feud between Vasa and Mamia families, before being unveiled to the world by Costa in 1884 and brought back to a third public life by the success of the film of the same title (2022). On the way we will meet the village of Sant’Antonio di Gallura. A brief stop will allow you to see the street of the "stazzi" that formed the "cussorgia" which became an autonomous municipality in 1954. The “Society of the Stazzi", which connects Corsicans with Sardinians, a key to understand the culture and the behaviour of the Galluresi (people of Gallura), will amaze you along the way, narrated by your tour guide. Time flies by quickly and we will soon be at the Arzachena country railway station. Gorgeous, with its architectural style.
The evening time gives us a milder climate and increasingly emotional colors. 18:35 - it whistle! 18:40, it snorts and rattles. Let's go! Our Little Green Train leaves slowly on the "narrow gauge" line, built during the social and industrial revolution, which from the mid-nineteenth century also overwhelmed the autarchic Gallura you just discovered today. From the windows, between granitic mamelons and the green of the cork oak woods, you can see the “cussorgie” and the “stazzi”, the leitmotif of the agro-pastoral history of these places.
